Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the uterus lining is found outside of the womb. Common areas include the ovaries and fallopian tubes, bowel, bladder, pelvis and sometimes even in the gastro-intestinal tract.

It is a multifactorial complex condition. Causes of endometriosis include retrograde menstruation, genetics, immune-mediated, environmental toxins and a hormonal imbalance.

There are varying degrees of endometriosis ranging from stage 1 (mild) to stage IV (severe).

It can be diagnosed by symptoms alone. A definitive diagnosis of endometriosis can be diagnosed by carrying out a laparoscopy.
